
I made a lot of these last year. Above is a selection of my favourites.
Here is my process. I selected one of my photos of the forest floor or flowers or even tree bark. Then I mixed the major colours, usually 8 or so. Sometimes various values of one colour. Then I used the mixed paint in a quick, no thinking composition, usually following a previous fast sketchbook drawing. I used fairly large brushes and didn’t clean them hardly at all in between, so the paint sort of blends and blurs messily.
They were so much fun.
While making a larger painting, I chose one of these studies that I was most excited about at the time and used those colours for the palette of the painting.
I’m going to keep working this way this year, if it ever warms up above -40. Otherwise I’m staying home. 🙂
